I was sort of excited a couple of months ago when I learned they were planning a new park about a mile from my house. Then, a couple of weeks ago I read about a disturbing incident at an off-leash park. Apparently there were no size restrictions or size separation and a very careless owner let a little puppy free to romp around with big dogs. Unfortunately the puppy was critically injured. The puppy’s owner blamed an aggressive bigger dog, and was very upset, but truthfully, I think the puppy’s owner was to blame. A big dog can seriously injure a smaller dog during the course of normal play, and the puppy’s owner should have known this. I have not yet taken my dogs to an off-leash park, but if they don’t have the park separated by size, there’s no way I’m letting them run free with dogs 10 or 15 times their size. In fact, even if they do have special areas designated for smaller dogs, I’m going to be keeping a close eye on them, and I would hope any responsible dog owner would do the same. I’m still looking forward to the dog park, because they will also have special dog walking trails and other activities, and I’ll be sure to pass along stories of our future adventures. In the meantime, if you take your dogs to an off leash park, please be careful and be aware of the potential for trouble. QUOTABLE QUOTES I wonder if other dogs think poodles are members of a weird religious cult – Rita Rudner A dog is not “almost human,” and I know of no greater insult to the canine race than to describe it as such – J Holmes GREETING CARDS… You’ll have a great time selecting and sending one of our greeting cards for dog lovers, and your friends will enjoy receiving them.
